Meet Hugo Levingston of Domaine de Mourchon
Walter
and Ronnie McKinlay bought Domaine de Mourchon in 1998 and still run the
estate, together with daughter Kate and son-in-law Hugo Levingtson.
Do
you remember how and when you first began working with Averys?
Averys offered our first order
in March 2005 for the Tradition Rouge, then we became regulars at the tastings
in Bristol … we’ve been ever since, 12 years now !
The
wines of Séguret are steadily gaining in reputation, which is in a large part
down to Domaine de Mourchon. What do you think makes the region so special?
Today Seguret as an appellation has experienced a
renaissance in wine production. Since we created Domaine de Mourchon 20 years
ago, a new generation of growers and winemakers have taken forward
their traditions with new attitudes and respect to developing respectful
techniques and technologies with a trend towards organic methods. Domaine
de Mourchon will be certified 100% in a few years - presently we are about
sixty percent.
Your
wines have been a huge hit with the critics, from Robert Parker to Jancis
Robinson MW - why do you think the wines have been such a big success?
Domaine de Mourchon similarly is a part of this
renaissance and today we stand together with our syndicate of winemakers proud
of our efforts and labour of respecting the soils we work with and highlighting
Séguret in the world of wine. Mourchon took Séguret’s name to the wine world
with our developments in the export markets, especially in the USA where
the press is important to American consumers. As these wine lovers in the world
contemplate more wines, the international wine press decipher
the vast choice by their recommendations and reviews, and we are very
proud of these recognitions.
You’re a regular at Averys tastings and hosted a fantastic
dinner for us just before Christmas. Will you be joining us in Bristol again
this year? Can customers also come along and taste your wines in France?
The dinners at the cellars are
always great occasions to get together with wine and food. I always look
forward to the Averys tastings… the next event is the Averys Summer of Wine (16th
June – order tickets at www.averys.com/events). The rosés and whites will be out for the season and equally
the reds which are great for the grills and BBQ’s. We love meeting the
Averys customers to talk the finer details of these wines and often includes a
good chat about what foods we love too.
Meanwhile, in the summer
back at the vineyard, our cellar and tasting room are always open including guided tours in the vines and visits to
the cellars… we love what we do and can’t help ourselves to pass on the
passions we have for our wines !
