Christophe Rocques-Boizel in their cellars in the 70's
Can you remember when you first met the Avery family and
when you started working with them?
The collaboration between the
Avery and the Boizel family started in 1963 when my grandfather René Boizel met
Ronald Avery. They created together the very first blend of Averys Special
Cuvée Champagne.
To those customers who may have not come across Boizel
before, can you tell us a little about Boizel and what sets you apart from
other Champagne Houses. Do you have a ‘house’ style?
Boizel is a unique
House as it has been run by the same family since its foundation in 1834. It’s
a 6th generation House focused on elaborating the finest cuvées
based mostly on Grand & Premier cru vineyards around Épernay. The Boizel
style is best defined by the words of finesse and elegance. For us the key
world is balance - balance between the complexity of aromas developed after a
long ageing in our cellars and the freshness of the wines thanks to the
Champagne terroir.
We’ve launched a special release of Averys Vintage
Champagne to commemorate our 225th anniversary. Can you tell us more
about the 2006 vintage and what makes this particular cuvée special?
2006 was a soft, fruity and
approachable vintage and the Chardonnays combine freshness and richness. This
Averys Vintage 2006 is a Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs made 100% from Chardonnay
grapes from the Côte des Blancs hill, which is the source of the best
Chardonnays in Champagne. After 11 years of ageing on lees, this wine shows a
great complexity of flavours while still retaining a lovely crisp character.
Like the Averys, your family has a long tradition in
wine. How important is this to you as a wine business?
Our partnership with Averys
started 55 years ago and is now on the 3rd generation, this is quite
unique in today’s wine business. You always have a special dedication to the
company that bears your name as our family life has always been mixed up with
the company. Each generation feels responsible for the transmission of the
tradition to the next generation. This assures a long term vision which is
vital for the commitment to the best quality.
